What a nice reminder and admonition! I loved your memory of receiving the books. 🙂 I, too, grew up in a large and poor family. I generally wore hand-me-downs and I am glad my parents taught me to be excited about them. As one of the youngest, the “Law of Diminishing Return” sometimes took effect and I did not get to wear some of the favorites I looked forward to receiving. But through the years God always provided. Many acts of kindness were bestowed on my family….folks sponsored me for a week of camp, the elementary and high schools let me work in the cafeteria for “free” lunches, people brought meals to our house, neighbors shared treats and the harvest from their fruit trees with us, etc…
During my sixth grade school year in Washington state, my teacher regularly had my mom drive to school to pick up boxes of hand-me-downs that were worn by her only daughter. They were like brand new clothes!! I think of this kind and benevolent teacher so frequently and a smile comes to my mind and heart!
Looking back and reflecting on these memories, I know God was using my teacher and others to be a huge blessing to me and my family and meet some of our needs! He is so good that way!
You are right about how it is better to give than to receive!! It is a wonderful feeling The Lord gives when being kind and benevolent! Thankfully, God has now placed me in a position to (*hopefully*) be a blessing to others and I attempt to do so on a regular basis. To whom much is given, is much required! Praise God from whom ALL blessings flow!!
    Thanks again for your encouragement!
